Schiefner, Franz Anton (in kyrill. Schr.: Шифнер Антон Антонович) (*18. Juni [=6. Juni a.St.] 1817 in Reval [heute Tallinn], †16. November [=4. Nov. a.St.] 1879 in Sankt Petersburg). Deutschbaltischer Sprachforscher. Pionier der Tibetologie, Mongolistik und Kaukasistik und Finno-Ugristik. 1843-52 Oberlehrer der klassischen Sprachen am 1. Petersburger Gymnasium, wurde er 1848 Kustos, 1863 Leiter der 2. Abteilung der Bibliothek der Akademie der Wissenschaften und 1852 Adjunkt für Tibetisch. 1856-78 war er außerdem Direktor des Ethnologischen Museums, 1860-73 Professor der klassischen Sprachen an der Kath. Geistlichen Akademie in St. Petersburg.
