Muir, John (*5. Februar 1810 in Glasgow, †7. März 1882 in Edinburgh). - Schottischer Sanskrit-Forscher und christlicher Apologet. - Ging 1829 nach Indien in die Zivilverwaltung der East India Company, wo er verschiedene Posten in der Administration bekleidete. 1853 zog er sich in den Ruhestand zurück und ging zurück nach Schottland. Begründete 1862 einen Lehrstuhl für Sanskrit und Vergleichende Sprachwissenschaft an der Univ. in Edinburgh.
